We believe that eye care for kids is about way more than just checking if they can see the board at school. Regular check-ups are essential to detect and address vision problems before they progress, contributing to better learning, development, and overall health.

Why early eye exams matter

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), all children should have their eyes examined at 6 months of age, at age 3 and again at the start of school. Children without vision problems or risk factors for eye or vision problems should then continue to have their eyes examined every year throughout school. Children with existing vision problems or risk factors should have their eyes examined more frequently.

Common risk factors for vision problems include:

  • Premature birth
  • Developmental delays
  • Turned or crossed eyes
  • Family history of eye disease
  • History of eye injury
  • Other physical illness or disease

Signs and symptoms of vision trouble

Kids often assume that what they see is normal. Frequent headaches, squinting, covering one eye, or having trouble reading or seeing things from a distance are all signs of potential issues.

If they’re rubbing their eyes often, it could also be a clue that something’s not quite right with their vision.

What to expect at a kid’s eye exam

“The eye doctor” can sound scary, but don’t worry – we make it fun and stress-free! Our experienced staff takes time to make sure your little one feels completely comfortable from start to finish.

Children’s eye exams typically last around an hour, and if your child isn’t reading yet, no worries – pictures will help us get the information we need without any tears or tantrums.

During the exam, we’ll perform a full eye health check including screenings for common childhood eye conditions. We’ll also assess how their eyes work together and look for any signs of potential issues that could affect their development.

How often should kids have eye exams?

We recommend annual eye exams for kids. If your child has specific concerns or conditions like myopia (nearsightedness), they may need more frequent check-ups. We also offer retinal scans to take a deeper look at their eye health, helping us catch possible issues early on.

Eyewear options that kids love

We’ve got glasses and contact lenses to fit every kiddo’s style. Whether it’s Ray-Ban, Nike, Lamb/GX, Lilly Pulitzer, or Oakley frames – or fun, kid-friendly brands like Tomato Glasses, Nano Sports, and Dilli Dalli – we’ve got something that will make your child excited for their eyewear.

If needed, we offer a variety of treatment options like glasses, contact lenses, or even specialized myopia control treatments to help preserve their future vision.
